For many hunters, September marks the beginning of dove season. Doves often perch on utility lines, making enticing targets for hunters. Shooting at utility lines is dangerous. Prince George Electric Cooperative would like to remind members to avoid damaging fiber and electric lines will while hunting this season.
Justin Harville, general manager of RURALBAND, expresses how shooting at utility lines is always a bad idea. “Damage caused by shooting fiber or power lines results in thousands of dollars in repair costs and leaves businesses and homes without power, internet, or phone service; this could make a life-or-death difference in an emergency situation, should one arise.”
Harville asks that hunters keep the following tips in mind during hunting season:
Keep clear of electrical and fiber equipment
Do not shoot at or near utility lines
Identify utility line locations before you hunt
Be vigilant in areas where lines are less visible
Never place stands or equipment on utility poles
Never place decoys on any aerial utility lines or equipment (This is extremely dangerous, as it creates the risk of electrocution.)
Good luck this hunting season and stay safe while enjoying the great outdoors.
